How I Got Here

My name is Seth Shober, and I grew up in Lancaster, Pennsylvania, Amish Country. I grew up living an active life, playing soccer, baseball, and golf. I was also involved with Boy Scouts of America since the age of 5. Growing up as a scout instilled in me many positive values and left me with skills and memories that will last my lifetime. Just prior to my 18th birthday I achieved the rank of Eagle Scout, a rank earned by only three percent of all scouts. That accomplishment is still the proudest moment of my life. Upon completion of high school I went to Misericordia University for two years to study sport management. After working in the IT department there I decided that was to be my path. I made the switch to Computer Information Systems and transferred to York College of Pennsylvania. I was there for two and a half years and graduated in December of 2011 with a degree in Computer Information Systems.

Throughout college I continued to connect with the outdoors and keep to my scouting roots. Over my last year of schooling the idea of hiking the Appalachian Trail was something that came in and out of my mind, and became more serious as time progressed. I owe this to friends I encountered at York, who put the bug into my mind, and from there it grew. Now it's time for me to get serious and make a commitment. Now may be the only time I have to do something like this. I have to take the time on my own. It won't be given to me. I have officially decided to do this thing; thru-hike the entire Appalachian Trail. I have a daunting feeling the closer it gets, but I know I can make it, and the feeling of finishing will be more rewarding than I can imagine.
